This week, we will start off by reviewing the differences between dramas and prose. Students will review for their monthly Evaluate test and test on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will begin our unit on Greek Mythology. There will not be any new spelling or vocabulary this week. Instead, we will focus on our past words of the week.

This week students will be continuing to identify the differences between poetry, prose and drama. We will be reading/acting out some Greek myths in our dramas this week as well (a prelude for what is to come). The vocabulary words given last week will be tested on Wednesday, March 22nd. There are no spelling words.

This week students will continue learning new poems, which will include Cinquain, Diamonte, Bio, and Concrete poems. We will continue to focus on prepositions in Grammar, however we will do a review on relative pronouns. Students should be working on their original poems of each kind as we learn them. Their final poetry book is due next Monday, March 13th. Students will test over prepositions, relative pronouns, and their poetry vocabulary on Friday, March 10th. There will be no spelling this week.

This week students will be asked to identify the point of view while comparing and contrasting them in different excerpts. We are moving on from main pronouns to their antecedents. A new spelling list will consist of commonly misspelled words and our Word of the Week is gargantuan which means huge or immense. There is no new vocabulary list.

February 13th
After two weeks of creating, researching, and writing, students presented their work today. Students will be writing a paragraph a day for the remainder of the year to prepare for 5th grade. Also we will start reviewing all skills with a daily dose very similar to what they have done all year in Math. The focus in Grammar is pronouns, while Reading will focus on different points of view. There will be no spelling or vocab this week, however we do have a Word of the Week: rotund-round and plump.
JANUARY 30th
The students will be reviewing adjectives in order to prepare for their test on Wednesday. We will continue our work with 1st and 2nd hand accounts, as well as points of view in text. We will begin a research project on historical events.

The students will be completing Stone Fox this week with a final project. They will choose between creating a race poster or a brand new book cover. After completing their projects, we will move on to first and second hand accounts in Reading. Grammar will focus on the different types of adjectives, such as demonstrative, comparative, and superlative. We will not have spelling or vocabulary words this week.

We will move on to chapter 3 of Stone Fox this week. Our focus will be on plot importance, vocabulary, synonyms and adjectives. We do NOT have spelling, but we do have new vocabulary for the upcoming chapters.

We are doing a book study on Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner. This week's focus will be on character analysis, setting, and making predictions. Analogies and progressive tense verbs will be our focus in grammar. There will not be any spelling words this week, however students have vocabulary words that go with chapters 1-3.

This week in ELA, the students will continue to study verbs and test on Friday. We will also continue to work on our Unemployed Elves project. Cover letters will be typed, applications will be completed, and students will work on answering potential interview questions in preparation for interviews next week.

We have been working on informal and formal language for 2 weeks now to prepare students for our big Elf Interviews Activity. For the entire month of December students will learn the proper ways to research a potential job, fill out applications, and prepare for a formal interview. They will be competing against each other for the most coveted jobs in the North Pole. During this time we will also work on verbs. Our new spelling list is coming home today, and will be tested on Friday, December 2nd. Our word of the week is defy.

Week of November 7th
Students will be working on possessive nouns, stoplight paragraphs, paraphrasing and listening to interviews this week. Students will learn more about some of their favorite children’s book authors through online interviews. They will then practice paraphrasing those interviews, writing their words into stoplight paragraphs and identifying the possessive nouns.

In ELA this week, students will continue review on dialogue, subjects, and predicates. Reading will still focus on the creation of students' Fairy Tales, and sequencing events from stories. Students will learn to edit their stories, which includes correcting spelling and punctuation errors. We hope to start writing our final copy on Friday. The finished copy is due Tuesday, September 20th. New spelling and vocabulary words will come home on Monday, however you may also find the list on our Spelling and Vocabulary tabs here on our website.

Students will learn to revise their work, which entails adding more to their story in order to make it the best it can be. In ELA this week, students will study the parts of a complete sentence which include a subject and a predicate. In reading, students will focus on the story elements of Fairy Tales in order to create their own. We will begin the writing process with brainstorming and rough drafts. Tests this Friday will include spelling and vocabulary. Students should expect to conference with Ms. G or Mrs. Hall about their progress on their rough drafts by this Friday.

In ELA this week, students will study words that have the long a sound. The test will be on Friday. In reading, we will focus on the Fairy Tale genre, and our skill will be sequencing. We will continue to study sentences in Grammar. Students will learn to identify and write statement sentences, question sentences, command sentences, and exclamatory sentences. There will be a Grammar Test over these types of sentences and fragments on Friday. We will test over last week’s vocabulary words on Wednesday.
